designer statement

Guided by the fascination of light, Dirk uses light as a medium that gives him the opportunity to communicate with an audience and to take them on a journey. Motion and emotion are a crucial part of Dirk's work.

This does not limit him to the walls of a theatre ore a stage only, he goes further and “paints” urban architecture such as parks or buildings with light, offering people to see their environment in a “new light”, to discover the ordinary things and to see them from a different, unexplored view.

The live performance still provides the most interesting field of lighting for Dirk. Passionate about the design, driven by a vision and a sound artistic knowledge he is able to organise a project from vision to realisation. Whereas lighting is often regarded as being technical he believes that it is a form of art.

This art is live and happens right on stage. However as a painter would know which tools to choose in lighting it is important to be able to rely on technical knowledge that Dirk uses to turn his visions into reality.
